On World Environment Day and as part of Logan City Council’s Envirogrants program, Wildlife Queensland was thrilled to receive a cheque for $5000 from Cr Lisa Bradley at this year’s LEAF Festival to undertake the first year of a 3 year program to confirm the presence of spotted-tailed quolls in the Logan City Council region.
'Looking out for Quolls in Logan' will build on the survey work undertaken in 2006 by Scott Burnett and Ivell Whyte in the northern section of the then Beaudesert Shire, as well as surveying other potential areas.
The spotted-tailed quoll is listed as Endangered under Commonwealth legislation, and as Vulnerable in Queensland (southern sub-species). This project has two main objectives:
- Camera trap surveys to ascertain whether quolls are present in parts of Logan.
- Community engagement through quoll discovery days: displays, presentations, practical advice for landowners such as safe use of pesticides and how to protect quoll habitat on private land.
Some threats that affect quoll populations can be managed by informed landowners. Interacting with the community will help us build up a picture of where quolls used to live as well as hopefully acquire new records.
The first priority will be to determine the likely areas of quoll habitat in the Logan Council area and to determine survey locations - these will initially focus on areas where sightings have been reported eg Greenbank - Jimboomba. Community consultation will be undertaken and a Quoll Discovery day will be held in late October.
The anticipated project outcomes will be to
- Confirm presence/absence of spotted-tailed quolls in Logan City Council.
- Raise community awareness of quolls and the importance of wildlife habitat.
- Engage local community in helping in conservation initiatives.
- Share information and listen to the experiences of the community.
Acquire improved knowledge about quolls - whether new sightings are received or not.
