Tony Abbott is currently running a misleading campaign to scrap Queensland’s Wild Rivers Act. If Abbott wins the support from just two more of the independents in Federal Parliament - Rob Oakeshott, Tony Windsor or Andrew Wilkie - as well as Senator Nick Xenophon in the Senate, he could succeed.
Such action would threaten the significant progress to date protecting many of Queensland’s wild rivers including the recent win for the Wenlock River and the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve on Cape York. This campaign run in the guise of protecting Indigenous land rights is designed to allow destructive development such as intensive agriculture and mining in Queensland’s most ecologically important rivers and waterways.
