Counting Cockatoos for Conservation - September 2010

Photo © Guy Castley

A great day out birding, the chance to win fantastic prizes, and the possibility of seeing one of Australia’s most threatened cockatoos! What more could you want?

The Glossy Black-Cockatoo, which feeds only on she-oak seeds, is threatened through habitat loss, but south east Queensland and northern NSW are still regional strongholds for the species. Volunteers are needed for the Glossy Black-Cockatoo Birding Day to be held Sunday 31st October.

The Birding Day counts of Glossy Black-Cockatoos in locations across SEQ and northern NSW will provide a snapshot picture of the numbers, distribution and social structure of these birds. With repeat surveys in the future we hope to build a better understanding of local and regional conservation requirements.

Regional coordinators are currently enlisting and training volunteer observers for the Birding Day. For more information and to find your local regional coordinator, visit the birding day pages online.
