Government Moves to Ban Balloons - July 2010

Wildlife Queensland understands the Queensland State Government is considering a ban of balloons being released at State run events.

Wildlife Queensland welcomes any initiative by the Queensland State Government to reduce or stop the release of balloons into the environment from events run or organised by the State Government.

There is growing research available that shows balloons are causing problems for some of our marine wildlife.

Any further expansion of such an initiative would require a public education program so people understood the facts and hopefully take voluntary and appropriate action that was in the best interest of our marine wildlife.

We understand the joy balloons can bring to events, but hope the public understand in the name of protecting our dwindling native marine wildlife we all take action that helps stops or at least reduces the release of balloons into our marine waters. We also welcome any manufacturing initiatives that makes balloons safer in our environment.
