WPSQ welcomes new minister - March 2009

The new Queensland Minister for Sustainability and Climate Change, Kate Jones

Wildlife Queensland welcomes the new Queensland Government under Premier Bligh and the new minister for Sustainability and Climate Change, Kate Jones. We’ve taken this opportunity to remind the new minister of the environmental challenges and priorities facing her in her new role. You must act now to:

  • Address climate change and build a sustainable future for Queensland.
  • Protect and restore the environment of land and sea.
  • Help plan a liveable community future for Queenslanders.

High priorities

These environmental priorities must be addressed urgently by the whole of the new Queensland Government:

  • Address climate change issues.
  • Put in place strategies for the conservation of our biodiversity.
  • Create innovative water solutions that do not include provision for inappropriate dam construction.
  • Allocate funding to expand the Protected Area Estate and commitment to the Nature Reserve System.
  • Foster sustainable population models for south-east Queensland
  • Pay more attention to renewable forms of energy with less focus on clean coal technologies in government energy policy.

Medium priorities

These issues are important too but less pressing than the preceding list.

  • Improve management of the Protected Area Estate through flora and fauna surveys and increase funding for weed and feral animal control.
  • Increase the Marine Parks Estate particularly with additional green zones up to 30% of the coastal regions.
  • Long-term sustained investment in integrated public transport systems.
