Wildlife Queensland congratulates the Queensland Government on the expansion of the D’Aguilar National Park by 32,000 ha, making it the largest National Park within 6km of the CBD of any Australian State capital.
On 5 June, the State government declared areas of Enoggera, Mt Glorious, D’Aguilar and Mt Mee, previously gazetted as ex-forest reserves and conservation parks, as part of the newly expanded D’Aguilar National Park.
The D’Aguilar National Park, increased from 6000 ha to 38,000 ha extends from Brisbane Forest Park to Mount Mee.
‘We welcome this expansion of Queensland’s national park estate,’ said Des Boyland, Wildlife Queensland spokesperson. ‘However, there is a long way to go before reaching Premier Bligh’s 2008 promised level of 7.5% of Queensland gazetted as National Park by 2020.’
The Queensland Premier marked the celebrations for the Centenary of National Parks in 2008 by promising the national park estate would expand by 50% within 12 years. She stated that the expansion would be funded out of the controversial Eco Fund Queensland.
‘Wildlife Queensland continues to lobby government to provide appropriate funding for the management of national parks,’ said Des Boyland.
‘We continue to campaign for 15% of the State to be national park in accordance with international standards and for these parks to be primarily for conservation purposes, not for recreation other than passive recreation where appropriate,’ said Des Boyland.
