Petition to slow 'unfair' Traveston dam process - November 2007

The cover of the proposed Traveston Crossing Dam EIS executive summary

Members of the public are being urged to sign an emergency petition to slow the controversial public consultation process of the Traveston Crossing Dam because of obstacles to meeting the state government’s submission deadline of 3 December 2007.

Complaints are being made about problems obtaining the relevant documents from the government-created private company in charge of the project and the short time allowed to read and submit comment on the large amount of material.

David Gibson, MP for Gympie, is sponsoring the Queensland Parliament ePetition that supports the Save the Mary River group’s attempts to extend the 6-week deadline for submissions on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) of the dam project proposal, which was released on 22 October 2007.

The closing date for the ePetition is Wednesday 14 November.

‘I will table [the petition] in Parliament on the last sitting day this year which is Thursday 15 November. Let’s show the Government that there is still a great deal of concern over this dam and that the fight is not over,’ said David Gibson in an email to supporters of opposing the dam.

The petition states that due to the expense of obtaining a hard copy of the draft EIS for the proposed dam at Traveston Crossing and the difficulties associated with obtaining electronic copies, it is unfair to expect the public to be able to prepare submissions on the draft EIS by 3 December 2007. The EIS contains more than 1600 pages of information and there are two volumes of technical reports as well.

Hard copies of the EIS are available for $150 each from Queensland Water Infrastructure Pty Ltd (QWI), the private company formed by the state government to construct water infrastructure projects in south-east Queensland, including the proposed Traveston Crossing and Wyaralong dams.

Printed full copies of the technical reports are available from QWI at a cost of $400 each.

The full EIS (80MB) can be downloaded for no cost from the QWI website. A CD-ROM version is also available for no cost by mail from QWI.
