Brisbane North Bank Development Cancelled - October 2008

The Premier listened to the people and announced the North Bank development as presented has been cancelled.

2275 submissions were received with 93% opposed to the development. The major concerns mirrored issues raised by WPSQ in our several submissions:

  • No infrastructure development in the river.
  • The impact of proposed buildings on views and the heritage precinct.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning, Hon Paul Lucas, said he was impressed by the large number of personally written submissions instead of form letters. Furthermore Hon. Paul Lucas stated ‘This is a once in a lifetime project and we are better off waiting until the longer term when the possibility of taking the Riverside Expressway underground could present the opportunity for a North Bank that would truly give the river back to the people.’

In the interim safety issues will be addressed.

Two issues warrant comment:

  • Reference to the personalised submissions. WPSQ has been advising for some time that this approach is far more effective than form letters.
  • If the Government listened to 2275 submissions for North Bank, what was the difference with the 16000 submissions for Traveston Crossing Dam, the 12000 for Moreton Bay Zoning plan and the thousands of submissions on the SEQ Regional Plan?
