Political parties asked fo their Green Policies - September 2004

WPSQ is asking all the main political parties for statements on their environmental policies to help Society members allocate their votes in the federal election on 9 October.

At the WPSQ Annual General Meeting near Coolum on 11-12 September 2004, members resolved to investigate the environmental credentials of the parties contesting the federal election.

Des Boyland, WPSQ Policies and Campaigns Manager, produced an issues paper outlining 8 significant issues concerning members:

  • Vegetation management
  • Climate change
  • Protection of the Great Barrier Reef
  • Protection of old growth forests
  • Rivers and water resource planning
  • Coastal development
  • Enforcement of legislation
  • Funding for environmental protection

The issues paper has been distributed to the offices of 6 political parties, asking for their prompt response based on each party's policy position. The political parties contacted were the Liberals, the ALP, the Nationals, the Greens, the Australian Democrats and the Family First party.

The parties' responses to the environmental issues will be compiled and the results forwarded to WPSQ branches for members' information. A summary of the results will appear on the Society's website in time for the election.
