Danger in the opera house

How many more platypuses will die in Queensland before the Government acts to ban opera house traps?

Wildlife Queensland has produced postcards and posters in our ongoing campaign to ban opera house traps in all Queensland public waters. If you would like to help us distribute postcards or posters, drop by our office in Brisbane’s CBD or email us. Or you can write to the Premier by using the electronic letter on our website.

We hope to see you at the Peaks to Points festival on 18 July - you can sign up for the campaign there.

‘Best budget in years?’

The Bligh Government has established a $100m Environment Fund that will provide $54m for national park acquisition and management as well as $45m for koala conservation over 5 years. One has to go back to the 1989 Goss Government to see similar funding levels for national parks.

In addition, funding for the Great Barrier Reef protection plan will continue and $3.5m has been provided to facilitate the nomination of Cape York for World Heritage Property listing. The role private landholders play in conservation was also recognised with additional funds for Nature Assist.

Is the Government on track to expand the national park estate to 7.5% of Queensland?

Conservation projects with a bright future

We all know that our actions have an effect on wildlife, but we often don't know enough about the important details. Through its grants program Wildlife Queensland, funded by the WPSQ Endangered Species Trust, is supporting research by university students so we can all find out more.

Our inaugural program attracted many applications. Here are the 5 successful applicants who have each received $1000 towards their research project.

Surprise target caught on camera!

The Far North Quoll Seekers Network has had several historic sightings of spotted-tailed quolls in the Speewah area near Kuranda, 30km north west of Cairns. However surveillance cameras caught another elusive creature in the rainforest.

Our website is growing and we are populating it with what we hope is useful information for our visitors. Have you seen our latest species profileCasuarius casuarius johnsonii, the southern cassowary?

New vision for North Stradbroke Island

The Bligh Government should be congratulated on their plan to phase out destructive mining practices on North Stradbroke Island by 2027. Planning for the future, protecting our unique natural heritage and taking significant action is paramount - before it is too late.

However wildlife and its habitat on Straddie remains at risk. Find out why.
