Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland, Logan Branch

Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland, Logan Branch (known as Wildlife Logan) focuses on Logan City and its immediate environs. The branch campaigns for the preservation of remnant bush land, wildlife corridors and waterways.

Members of our committee monitor environmentally inappropriate development applications, submit objections in support of better conservation and wildlife habitat outcomes, and support members of the public and local action groups with advice and fundraising as issues arise. We are a diverse group including a botanist, ecologist, accountant, dentist, artists and wildlife carers. We regularly participate in community forums that discuss the environment and related issues.

We welcome all members of the public to our meetings and would love to have the opportunity to start up some subcommittees e.g. for a revegetation/ tree planting project or a project to monitor a waterway or wetland.  We would be very happy to help with applying for grants to assist with this or any other interesting wildlife project.

Here are some examples of recent projects and campaigns:

  • In June 2008, the Logan Branch was awarded a Logan City Council EnviroGrant to locate and identify weeds, in particular Singapore Daisy, in East Logan, in order to recommend an eradication/control programme to the Council.  Reply to comment: We did not pull weeds. The project was mapping with GPS involving lots of walking and bike riding – no photo available.
  • The following year we produced maps of the Singapore Daisy and other weeds which are of ongoing assistance to Council Officers.  We are kindly being kept up to date with the spraying programme by the Councillor who is Chair of the Environment Committee and we will continue to monitor the success of this project.

In 2010, we received another Logan City Council EnviroGrant to produce a brochure entitled 'Living with Wildlife on Acreage'.  The brochure has been expanded to a booklet and we have been commended by the Council on kick-starting something which will be of great value and interest to acreage owners. Our hope is that the booklet will go to all acreage owners, current and new, and that it will help to retain wildlife habitat on privately owned acreage.
  • In June 2011, with our encouragement and support, WPSQ head office in Brisbane received an EnviroGrant for a new project, ‘Looking out for Quolls in Logan.’  This 3 year project was the main focus of our display at the Logan Eco Action Festival this year.
  • We are currently running a case in the Planning & Environment Court to protect vulnerable wetland at Carbrook.  We have also been successful in winning a quarry extension proposal in the Appeal Court. Although we have not yet managed to halt the environmentally damaging quarry, we will continue to work tirelessly with local residents and other groups to stop this proposal once and for all.

Over the years, Wildlife Logan has run workshops on various environmental issues of local interest including wetlands, how to write submissions, hosted events such as the southern branches get-together, and worked closely with other community groups.
