Act on Climate Change!

Queensland is one of the most vulnerable regions of the world to the impacts of climate change. Impacts must be urgently reduced by limiting the growth of global emissions.

100% renewable energy!

Aim for 100% renewable energy sources for Queensland.

  • Mandatory wind (15%), solar (15%), and geothermal (10%) energy production by 2020
  • New coal mines or coal fired-power stations must be guaranteed carbon neutral.
  • Minimum carbon neutral building standards for residential (7 star) and commercial (6 star) buildings.
Impose development standards!

Impose a standard on all new developments that guarantees that they do not add to Queensland’s greenhouse gas emissions by means of direct mitigation and carbon offsets.

Engage communities!
  • Identify climate-affected regions
  • Fund community-based adaptation measures
  • Fund additional specialist support for emergency services.
Secure future water supplies!

Climate projections show that Queensland's rainfall will reduce over the next 50 years. We need to secure our water future now in the face of increasing demand.

Stop killing rivers!
  • The 12 dams and weirs currently proposed for construction in Queensland will kill many of our river systems.
  • Agriculture, mining and urban water users must be made to manage water sustainably without building unreliable water storages or expensive pipeline infrastructure.
Introduce sustainable strategies!

SEQ residents showed that it is possible to reduce water consumption.

  • Re-instate the 140L/person/day limit for individual water use.
  • Apply similar standards to all Queensland urban centres, linked to regional water allocations.
Protect our rivers!
  • Commit to declaring Cape York's identified wild rivers by 2010
  • Commit to protecting new wild river basins elsewhere in Queensland
Protect our land and sea!

Queensland has the lowest proportion of land area protected (5%) of all our States and Territories.

The habitats of Queensland’s threatened species are the nationally the least protected.

At least 30% of natural habitats on land and sea should be protected.

Fight pollution!
  • Remove pollution threats through new land use regulations
  • Implement the leasehold land strategy.
Encourage biodiversity!

Underwrite EcoFund Queensland by $100 million by 2014 as a Biodiversity Under Climate Change Future Fund.

Protect vegetation!
  • Prevent further logging and clearing in areas of high biodiversity and ecological significance by reducing exemptions under the Vegetation Management Act.
  • Develop a Carbon Offsets Scheme for Regrowth Vegetation.
Declare Cape York Peninsula!
  • By 2010, put together a draft agreed proposal for World Heritage listing in consultation with Traditional Owners.
  • Include property acquisition and land management arrangements in the proposal.
Create a liveable future!

The next State Government must invest in and plan for a sustainable community future. Some of our communities are struggling to preserve their identities in the face of overwhelming population influx while others are dying from lack of resources.

Limit to a sustainable population!

Develop a Sustainable Population Strategy for Queensland that stabilises our population in the long term to an ecologically sustainable level.

Build the necessary controls!
  • Amend the Integrated Planning Act (IPA).
  • Ensure that all regional plans, including the IPA, assess future carrying capacity including resource and population limits based on agreed sustainability indicators.
