WPSQ draft water policy released for member comment

Are dams the answer? Where will we source our water in the future?

Water is still key issue since Wildlife Queensland kicked off its submission process at the end of 2006 to create a WPSQ water policy.

Wildlife Queensland has released its draft water policy for comment to WPSQ branches. The text of the policy is based on submissions from Society members and research by the Society’s policies and campaigns staff.

The draft policy establishes Wildlife Queensland’s position on major issues relating to water use, conservation and management. Its goals and major actions aim to protect water resources and ensure the sustainable use of water.

A policy on management of the Great Artesian Basin will be presented in a separate document.

Policy summary

The draft policy supports any sustainable water storage and delivery system (including dams and associated infrastructure) in which the associated water harvesting, manufacture, control and management activities have:

  • no or minimal environmental impact;
  • low energy costs or use renewable energy sources;
  • realistic targets and measurable performance indicators;
  • demonstrated they are economically viable in the long term.

Desalination would be favoured over new dams provided it satisfies the above criteria.

The draft policy recommends that priority should be given to these water sources: rainwater tanks, recycling of water based on the correct technology; and the appropriate use of grey water.

Draft policy goals

The policy lists actions to achieve its goals. The major goals of the policy aim to promote:

  • water conservation
  • environmental values
  • sustainable water use

and ensure wildlife is not unduly impacted.

Comment now

The policy draft is currently being considered by the Society’s policy working group and regional branches.

Individual members may also comment.  Email WPSQ head office to request a copy of the draft policy document. Submissions must be received by head office by Friday 31 August 2007.
