Minister decides: No duck and quail hunting in 2005

A step closer to a permanent ban on recreational shooting of duck and quail

Persistent lobbying and communication of the facts to government by members of the public and the environmental alliance of Wildlife Queensland, Birds Queensland, Animal Liberation Queensland and the RSPCA has resulted in the Queensland Environment Minister Desley Boyle announcing the suspension of the 2005 duck and quail hunting season.

However, a permanent Queensland ban on all future hunting remains to be achieved and Wildlife Queensland will continue to pressure the Queensland Government to take this step.

'Wildife Queensland trusts that a permanent ban on recreational hunting of duck and quail will be achieved during 2006 at the latest,' said Des Boyland, WPSQ's Policies and Campaigns manager. 'Queensland can join the more enlightened states and territories of WA, NSW and the ACT where this recreational hunting is not legal.'

In announcing there would be no 2005 season, Minister Desley Boyle referred to the State's drought conditions, the dramatic fall in duck numbers since 1984, the lack of surface water in dams and the dry long-term weather forecast - all of them factors in low duck populations.
