Wildlife Capricorn is a community organisation committed to an ecologically
sustainable future for people and wildlife. Wildlife Capricorn is the Capricorn
Branch Inc. of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland (WPSQ).
Wildlife Capricorn has been active on the Capricorn Coast since 1984. With
WPSQ we are dedicated to protecting, appreciating and preserving our native
animals, which are under threat from the activities of humans and in competition
with introduced feral species.
Wildlife Capricorn is active in many areas.
Community education
- Support community education volunteers
- Give talks to school groups
- Provide resources for teachers
- Displays on wildlife issues at public events, with volunteers to answer
questions from the public
- Organise public events to encourage appreciation of wildlife and the natural
environment, for example, talks by experts and field trips.
Public participation in democracy
- Members regularly discuss and follow up issues that we think are important
to our aims through research, letter writing, submissions and administration.
- Consultation and liaison with the Queensland Department of Natural Resources
and Mines, Livingstone Shire Council, the Australian Army, the Great Barrier
Reef Marine Park Authority, Central Queensland University, Fitzroy Basin Assoc.,
Queensland Transport, local primary producers, other environmental and cultural
groups, schools at all levels and the media.
Our consultation and liaison work relies on members willing to represent Wildlife
Capricorn.
Hands-on conservation
- We maintain conservation reserves at the Duck Ponds Reserve, near Rockhampton,
and the Bukkulla Conservation Reserve, near Marlborough.
- We support tree-plantings, dune restorations, organic gardening, permaculture
and landcare projects run by other groups on the Capricorn Coast whose activities
fit in with our aims.
Get together with wildlife people.
- Members' get-togethers and outings statewide.
- Members can become involved in the WPSQ's state organisation based in Brisbane,
which has been established for 40 years.
- The more energy we put in, the more gets done. Executive members help Wildlife
Capricorn operate, for example, taking minutes, administration, and decision
making and reporting.
